Murder at Yellowstone City Mystery Filmed at Yellowstone Film Ranch

Carter Boehm guides Ponderosa Films in Paradise Valley, Montana, and has overseen the development of the Yellowstone Film Ranch. In June 2022, Carter Boehm’s project partner Richard Gray spoke about his involvement in creating a meticulously authentic 19th-century mining town that is also the setting for the Gray-directed “Murder at Yellowstone City.”

With Gabriel Byrne starring, the film takes place in 1881. It offers a complex plot that resembles an Agatha Christie movie in its intricate twists and multifaceted roles. The film follows the narrative arc of a black gunslinger and former slave with the extraordinary ability to recite long passages from Shakespeare. Arriving in a frontier town, the local Sheriff frames him for murder and places him in prison.

Gray explains that this scenario, rather than descending into stereotypes, brings up relevant issues of social injustice and the ethical quandaries ordinary people face when asked if they will stand up for justice. Ultimately, the film's heroes are unwilling to remain silent, even if it places their lives at risk. The 28 buildings that make up the Yellowstone Film Ranch, which also provided on-site housing for the crew and actors as filming progressed, provide a rich backdrop for a tapestry of interconnected events that most resemble classic movies such as “And Then There Were None” and “Murder on the Orient Express.”
